PTSD

How terribly sad. Joseph Dwyer, the US Medic, who once won the hearts of everyone when he was shown rescuing an injured Iraqi boy who had been caught in crossfire has died of an overdose. He was suffering the ravages of PTSD from his time in combat and unable to cope with the trauma. He was only 31 years old. For some the war never ends.

  1. This is so sad, so sad. I hope people will remember in November who got us into this war and how.

  2. Well, that was a jolt and a change of pace from the sky shot frivolity. But thanks. And I'm with Kay.

  3. That is a heart breaker that makes me think hard about commitment and compassion.

  4. Very sad. PTSD needs to be taken seriously. And I don't think the war ever ends for those you were sent there to fight it. And for what? It's all so ridiculous in the big scheme of things for everyone involved. War is stupid. I know that sounds simplistic, but sometimes things are a lot more simple than we try to make them.

It is indeed sad that a man who, according to our perception, "has every reason to live" in his own "has every reason to die."

I think that everyone who has had suicidal thoughts will realize how logical it all seems at the time even if we recant afterwards. Minds are in some ways islands signalling at one another from afar.

Perhaps the very horror of the death and destruction of war that prompted this man's suicide was the same impulse that caused him to rescue the child. He thus passed on his own chance to live to another.
